Is your checklist ready before you go get Leh’d?

Are you finally ready for that Ladakh trip which you have been dreaming and planning for years? Well, before you leave, you need to do some homework to make it one of the most beautiful trips of your life.

As the land of high passes, Ladakh is filled with snowy mountains and rocky outcrops and is located in high altitude, it is very important for you to take care of yourselves from not falling sick during the travels. If you prepare well and travel wisely, you are going to have a lifetime experience in this erstwhile Buddhist kingdom.

We share you some tips on the kind of clothes, the medications, the gadgets and so on that you should have with you during the trip.  


Carry a lot of winter clothes with you which can be used as layering. For instance, you can carry thermals, T-shirts, Sweaters and jacket so that you can use it according to the temperature. Layering clothes, instead of thick jackets, will help you keep warm and be light on your travel pack too, keeping in mind that climate across Leh Ladakh may vary. If you are traveling from Leh to Pangong – it will be cold but If you are going to Nubra Valley from Leh, it will be hot as it is a dessert.  A win-win, if you please!

Sports shoes of any kind will give you a comfortable trip but ladies, if you want to click pictures and flaunt your fashion on social media pages, them boots will be the best bet. Satiate the style and photo freak in you by carrying colorful accessories such as stoles, scarfs, caps, hats, bandanas and sun shades.

You may suffer from Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) while traveling across Leh Ladakh as you will encounter rapid exposure to low amounts of oxygen at high elevation. The symptoms of AMS include headaches, vomiting, tiredness, trouble sleeping, and dizziness. It can happen to people of any age, sex or fitness level.

You need to be careful for the first two days at Leh- Ladakh and let your body acclimatize and adjust as per the oxygen level of the terrain. Before leaving for the trip make sure to meet a physician to take necessary advices and carry medicines along with you for cold, cough, and motion sickness.

A simple trick – carry lemon and camphor with you as it will help you when you have breathing difficulties. Also, take mustard oil to apply on the nostrils as it can become dry and painful due to dry and cold winds of Ladakh.

Skincare and Haircare

It is important to take care of your skin when you travel to high altitude. Hence, carry three basic cosmetics with you – a sunscreen lotion, a lip balm and a moisturising cream. Ta daa, you are glam-ready!

Men, take care of yourselves. There is no point in boasting that you aren’t worried about getting tanned. Prevention is always better!

Ladies, take care of your hair as the breeze will literally tangle your hair. Tie it tightly and if at all you want to leave your hair and flaunt it, do it only for pictures and cover it quickly.

If you are passionate about photography, yes, carry your DSLR with you and if you are a mobile photographer, remember that there is very low network coverage. So you may not be able to upload your regular updates through the day and at times, you might be able to go online only once in 2-3 days. Only Airtel and BSNL have range there. If you want to communicate with your dear ones, it is better to get a sim card from there by submitting your ID proof. To make travel more enjoyable, take your selfies stick, Bluetooth speaker and power banks with you.
